Keep centre, the dancer said

Untitled [Las Vegas] by Saul Steinberg, 1989

I rode highways on a tilt

and watched the earth keeling over.

I searched for the river

through a street of mansions

each lonesome in crisp green lawns.

I danced blind in art's cavern

looking for a neon cross underfoot.

I toggled the flame high and low

bubbling over, going limp,

over and over.

Off centred in the new world

I spent all weekend finding centre.
